The delivery of a painless and humane end of life is one of the greatest responsibilities for animal medical staff. A certified euthanasia technician's first responsibility is to the welfare of the animal; to assure that the animal is treated with compassion and respect, regardless of circumstance. The purpose of the euthanasia by injection (EBI) certification training is to provide in-depth instruction using generally recognized best practices in humane EBI for employees of a companion animal shelter or county dog warden who are responsible for this procedure.
TOPICS
Topics include: History of animal shelters and euthanasia; understanding euthanasia drugs and dosages; drug administration methods; humane restraint techniques; verification of death; managing stress and compassion fatigue; and federal and state requirements.
REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION
Registrants must attend all live virtual sessions and pass the final exam for certification. Sessions meet three times virtually and one time in-person near Columbus and are facilitated by certified euthanasia instructor Dr. Cathy Anderson, licensed veterinarian with a master’s degree in shelter medicine.
This course does NOT require participants to euthanize an animal. Additional practice under the direction of a veterinarian is strongly recommended before applying for this certification.
TRAINING ELIGIBILITY
This training meets and exceeds the minimum requirements for euthanasia technician training as outlined under Ohio Law (see ORC Sec. 4729.532) and is intended only for those who intend to perform euthanasia at a licensed animal shelter. Under ORC 4729.01(T)(1), "animal shelter" means a facility operated by a humane society or any society organized under ORC Chapter 1717 or a dog pound operated pursuant to ORC Chapter 955. You have to meet this definition of an animal shelter in order to perform euthanasia without a veterinarian on-site.
$200 per person for Ohio Fed members
$300 per person for non-members
Fee includes 12 hours of live virtual instruction plus 4 hours of in-person instruction, a handbook and other resources, examination for certification and a certificate of completion.
The per person fee is not included with the Webinar Bundle.
